Last weekend I camped at Torreya State Park near Tallahassee, Florida.

I completely fell in love with how quiet it is and how at home I felt on this trip. If you are searching for a place that is away from EVERYTHING, this is the place to be. This town is absolutely adorable. In the immediate area of the state park is a Volunteer Fire Department & a Polling Precinct. That’s all. It’s like a setting for a really great romantic comedy.

I pulled up the the gate and immediately knew this was going to be a very relaxing three days. The park is so tucked away that there is absolutely no through traffic. Just you and nature.

I checked in as soon as I got there. The ranger station has a big sitting room filled with chairs & board games for all ages. I interacted with three rangers during my stay and they were all extremely pleasant and helpful. Part of the reason that I chose to stay at Torreya was because it is very close to several other state parks. This was perfect for putting a small dent in my mission to complete all 175 State Parks. The park rangers were happy to point me in the direction of everywhere I had planned to visit.

I got my campsite all set up and could not have been happier. It came with a fire ring & a picnic table. The view was amazing. Both mornings I had the privilege of waking up and watching the sun rise from my bed. It made for a great start to my days.

After I was all settled in I ventured out to the Gregory House. They do daily tours, however I did not have time to do one this trip. The house overlooks the Apalachicola River & has nice benches which make for the perfect place to watch the sun set. Down the road from the campsites the park also has a playground, pavilions with grills, & horseshoes.

In the campsite area there is a hiking trail, however due to the damage from Hurricane Michael you can only walk so far in before you have to turn around and go back out the way you came in. I did enjoy the trail because it is actually a little bit of a challenge. It isn’t just flat like most places in Florida.

I can say with 100% certainty that I will be back.

Happy Camping!
